I’ve always liked calendars. Measuring out the days, keeping track of things, gives you a sense of where you’ve been and where you’re going – even if where you’ve been is “Flu shot” and where you’re going is “Take sofa to dump.” I was never good at keeping a diary, which might seem odd for a writer until you consider many writers’ need for a sense of an audience. It’s lonely enough pounding away at the keyboard (or just sitting there chewing your fingernails in despair).

As the New York Times reported, Mr. Obama inarguably fashioned an impressive victory for any Democrat, much less the first black nominee in American history. His 52 percent share of the popular vote exceeded that of any Democratic candidate since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 — and topped Ronald Reagan’s 1980 majority against Jimmy Carter. Now, the real work begins!

Asking questions helps us maintain an awareness of where we’ve been and where we are going. We ponder our successes and failures while scripting our life’s story. Finding success in a crazy world requires a willingness to pay attention to each day. By asking yourself and answering 3 questions at the end of each day, you can mark your progress. The 3 questions: “What (specifically) did I do today for fun?” “What (specifically) did I do today to improve myself?” and “What (specifically) did I do today to get more business?”

In the afterword of the book, Mr. Crichton gives us a look into how this book was born. He was attending a lecture of a friend on boring works of literature. His friend mentioned Beowulf as an example. Mr. Crichton took exception, claiming that Beowulf was quite interesting and could be even more so if treated slightly differently. What resulted from that little tete a tete was Eaters of the Dead.

You’ve heard about people who have survived near-death experiences and the incredible impact it can have. A near-death experience can change values, beliefs, and attitudes. Don’t wander through life almost living and don’t wait for a near-death experience to really begin living. Start making your life really count now.

“All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray.” So begins one of my all-time favorite songs. I love it for its harmonies and the way it brings back that long ago time when I was young and the Mamas and the Papas were all over the radio, not because I love the time of year when the leaves are brown and the sky is gray.

Soon, when you get home from work, it will be dark. Life turns inside as the days get shorter, clocks are turned back, and the weather gets colder. It’s the time of year I haunt the bargain bins and the dollar stores to look for inexpensive books. It’s also the only time of year I buy paperbacks. Here are some suggestions as you are lounging in your recliner next to the fireplace while the wind blows the snow sideways.

Counting the issue you are holding or reading online, there have been 67 issues of 365ink. I have written about books for 64 of them. Since the beginning I’ve tried to find a good reason to write about Flann O’Brien, and it’s taken me 63 issues to realize that Flann O’Brien’s writing is all the reason I need.

Live in the moment. Lives are so complex and so full of things to do that it is easy to let moments slip by without notice. If you’re not in the moment, you’re either thinking about the past or the future. You cannot operate from the past or the future because the past is history and the future is mystery. You can be in the moment!

The economy, it seems, has gone to hell in a hand basket and everyone is running scared. The national news is reporting that no one can get loans, from big corporations to the little guy looking for a used car. The world economy is faltering and saddest of all, the ultra-rich are feeling forced to distance themselves from their extravagant toys, not because they can’t afford them anymore, but simply because of the heat is coming down on them for spending while everyone else is hurting. Even with a nearly thousand-point resurgence in the stock market, they’re saying that the effects of the last two weeks will be felt for months to come. And then there are the problems we had before the market tanked, like high gas prices and crumbling mortgages.

Twenty five years ago, I spent the week of Christmas in California with my first extended family. Much of that vacation is only a blur, and some of it was a nightmare. But what’s been driving me nuts lately is one little detail I thought I’d never forget – the name of a winery we visited. I know we went to two: Robert Mondavi, and – the other one. For years, I knew the name. Any time the subject of wineries or Napa Valley came up, I could easily summon both names and mention, either casually or smugly, “Oh yeah, I’ve been to Mondavi and” – the other one.

Questions are powerful and guide you in your search for information. In order to coordinate your life, you need to know what other people are feeling and thinking. The answers to your questions open the door to knowledge and understanding. Asking good questions is the basis for effective communication.

Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency, by Barton Gellman, is almost guaranteed to start a fistfight. People who don’t like Dick Cheney will find that their worst nightmares aren’t as bad as they think and that the things we didn’t know about Cheney’s activities make their worst nightmares look like a Rainbow Brite movie. The people who like Dick Cheney, a quickly shrinking minority, will find that this book is so well-researched and the attestations so solid that they won’t be able to explain it away as a pack of lies invented by the vast left wing, liberal, media elite, commie, un-American, hippie … well … you know.

One of the questions often asked is what foods can a person eat to help lower cholesterol. The good news for many Americans trying to lower their cholesterol is they can do that by simply eating foods they already enjoy eating. Foods like orange juice, chips, bread and yogurt are being fortified with a natural plant extract, called plant sterols, that may help lower cholesterol.

It might be the most important dinner date you will have, the one with your family. That’s right; gather the kids around the table for a family meal. That’s because the more often you have dinner with your kids, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. This year’s Eat Dinner Together Day will be celebrated on September 22, 2008.

Our esteemed publisher’s recent wedding has me thinking about marriage lately. I know this sounds lame, but I used to sit at meetings and go around the table looking for wedding rings. I already knew which of my coworkers were married and which were not, but I took a perverse pleasure in checking out the ring fingers on their left hands.
