2008 in Review and 2009's Forecast
It’s probably safe to say that 2008 will be one that history remembers, from the sub-prime mortgage crisis and the resulting market meltdown to Michael Phelps winning eight Olympic gold medals, from recession and record gas prices to the election of Barack Obama, the United States’ first African-American President. Whether we’re talking crisis or accomplishment, 2008 had some pretty big stories.

The New Diamond Jo Casino Opens
What a difference a year can make. Announced last December – almost exactly one year ago – the new Diamond Jo Casino is open. With a whole slate of upcoming shows scheduled at the Mississippi Moon Bar and a brand new casino set in a huge entertainment facility, it’s fair to say that the Port of Dubuque and in fact the entire Dubuque entertainment landscape is about to experience a major transformation.

A New Era of Entertainment Begins
Given that in the pages of this issue of 365ink we've covered the luxurious gaming amenities, restaurants, bowling lanes and more of the new Diamond Jo Casino, it would be remiss of us to forget about yet another exciting aspect of this new entertainment facility: The live entertainment itself!

So it only made sense after featuring some of the other Tri-State area wineries this summer and autumn to check in with the Smiths to find out how things have been going in the past year.

Built in 1827 as human shelter when John Quincy Adams was president the cabin has been restored as an interpretive site. To study this small cabin is to consider with awe the hardy, optimistic men and women who cast away the burdens of their past and made a new life in the Wisconsin lead region.

Spa Days in Small Town Wisconsin
Every fall for the past three years, a group of girls and I have Ladies Camp night. We spend two nights away from our kids and husbands and jobs and housework for some wholesome “us” time.
This year, one of our excursions involved a spa day with the chicks at Brenda’s Beauty Bar in Bloomington, Iowa.

Tastes of University Hill
Back in the day (ancient times when Mike Ironside went to Loras), there were four bars on what can best be dubbed University Hill – Whiskey River, The Avenue Top (known to everyone as “The Ave”), Gomer’s, and the bar then known as the Barrel Tap and, later, Schrobie’s. Of course, this was before the drinking age changed to 21, so every weekend there were hordes of drunken college kids packing the bars and roaming the streets between them.
