Want to get out of the house for a while? Want to do something for that teenager who says "I'm bored?" How about a beginner pottery program? Rekindle that creative energy! Our new beginner program will focus on wheel throwing and coil/slab building with clay. Along the way students will learn what clay can do, what it can't do, why isn't it really mud, and demonstrations that reveal the 'I never knew you could do that' stuff. Students will be allowed to learn at their own pace and have one on one access to accomplished and knowlegdable potters. While the focus of this program is really and introduction to clay, students will gain an appreciation of design and function of both wheel thrown and sculptural/architectural forms. As each week's session begins, we'll demonstrate a new form or technique and allow open time for practice. At various points, we'll collect the "I really want to keep that" work and teach students how to decorate, glaze and fire pieces in our studio kilns. From time to time students will also be invited to add their work with other potters to fire the large wood fired kilns located on a nearby farm. This program officially begins on Tuesday May 6th from 7-9pm at Mississippi Mud Studios at Fountain Park. There is no limit to beginner student membership. Since we all learn at different rates, this program is not strictly defined as a 6 or 8 week class. We are going to allow monthly renewals (one full month minimum) for as long as one wishes to attend. All beginner students are invited to attend the Monday night regular associate gathering because we feel that networking and seeing what others are doing only enhances one's motivation and learning.
